Points of Information

The "Point of Information" is a e-newsletter published by the Speaker of the Senate that provides updates on recent Senate meetings, including recaps of legislation passed, nominations, and upcoming elections. It also shares important announcements for SGA members in general, such as training sessions, budget deadlines, and recruitment opportunities. Additionally, the newsletter highlights campus-wide events, workshops, and upcoming Senate meetings, ensuring that all members are informed and prepared for their roles.

MEETING RECAP

  • This past Tuesday, we held an emergency Senate to elect an Executive Director of Elections. The meeting was motioned to turn into a full body to allow us to hold the vote.

  • Congratulations to Kate Mittelhauser on being elected as our next Executive Director of Elections!

    • Nominations can be made over email or during senate. Nominations by email are highly preferred. 

      • Send an email to sgasenatespeaker@northeastern.edu AND Sgaelections@northeastern.edu with the full name of the nominee, the position, and a voting member of the Senate CC-ed who is willing to second the nomination.

      • Both the nominator and the second must be voting members of Senate!

      • The person seconding the nomination must reply confirming their second.

      • After the nomination is seconded, the nominee must reply accepting within 24 hours.

      • Nominated candidates will have 5 minutes to give a speech and 5 minutes to answer questions at the upcoming election Senates!

    • RG-SP-24-109 (Formalization of Speaker of the Senate) was passed. Congrats to the Authors!  

  • We also heard the proposal for the 2024-2025 annual budget which was approved.

  • It’s Wellness Week! Come learn about narcan and how to administer it in Curry 336 on Wednesday at 6pm! Then, Join Jamira for the first of four sessions focusing on mental resilience for Black students in the JDOAAI on Thursday at 6:30pm!

  • Join SGA at Northeastern’s annual Relay For Life event next Friday, March 22, in Matthews Arena from 6pm-6am. Relay is an all-night event to signify the fight that cancer patients undergo. It is a great way to get involved with the Northeastern community while making a difference for those in need and supporting a worthy cause. There will be plenty of games, performances, and other activities to participate in for the entire 12 hours, but it isn't required that you stay the whole time. If you’re interested, please join our SGA team using this link

  • Last Monday, Senate held a Full Body Senate!

  • We nominated the candidates for this year's Student Body Elections. Congratulations to the nominees! 

  • Congratulations to all our authors! This week we voted and passed 4 pieces of legislation: 

    • RG-SP-24-101 (SIB Restructure) passed. The Student Involvement division is now 3 boards and 1 committee! 

    • RG-SP-24-102 (Global Engagement Committee) passed.

    • RG-SP-24-104 (SAF Manual) passed. Annual Budgets went out last night! 

    • IR-SP-24-103 (Expedited Process for IR/ RGs) passed. 

  • We also had new legislation and a memo presented:

    • Senator Elections Memo was presented. We will be hosting focus groups about this at our next Senate so please review and come prepared. 

    • IR-SP-24-105 (Engagement hours) was presented. Please reach out the the author with any questions. 

  • We heard the referenda for this year's direct elections ballot!

 SGA ANNOUNCEMENTS 

  • Annual Budgets: A message for all undergraduate organizations that annual budgets are now live on engage. Budgets are due at midnight on March 26th. There is also a NEW manual! Please find al information on the finance board website: http://neufinanceboard.com

  • STEP (New Senator Training) is complete. If you missed one or both STEP sessions you will be contacted by Speaker Donoghue shortly regarding a makeup.  

    • Makeups will be offered on Thursday from 2:00-4:00 pm and Friday from 12:00- 2:00 pm! In the SGA Office (Curry 332). 

    • Please contact Speaker Donoghue if these times do not work for you and you need an alternative slot!

  • This week we heard 3 new pieces of legislation. These, in addition to RG-SP-24-101, will be voted on this Monday, 2/26. Please read the legislation and contact the authors with any amendments, questions, or comments.

    • IR-SP-24-103 (legislation expedition process)

    • RG-SP-24-104 (finance board manual)

    • *Notes: The authors of RG-101 have requested that any proposed amendments  are communicated by this weekend so they can review and consider them fully  before Monday’s Senate meeting

  • We will hold our first SGA-wide general meeting on Tuesday, February 27 from 6:30–7:30 on Zoom and in EXP 204.

    • This meeting is open to everyone involved in SGA. We are planning to go over updates from the semester and share information about upcoming Association-wide events (year-end gala, passing of the gavel, senate at the statehouse, etc). For senators, attendance counts towards engagement hour requirements. There will be SGA merch!

Welcome back to Senate! It was great seeing some new faces in this week's meeting! This email (the "POI") serves as a recap of all of the information we covered during each Senate to keep you and the Northeastern study body as up-to-date as possible! 
 

MEETING RECAP

  • This week we had our first Working Senate of the semester! 

  • Leadership applications are still open! The link is available here. Please read the list and description doc in the description line for important information about the positions including the deadlines. Reach out to the listed contact with any questions. 

    • Assistant Speaker of the Senate application is due tonight by 11:59PM 

    • The positions under the Director of Digital Innovation are also due by tonight 11:59PM

    • Applications for all other positions are due February 6th 

    • Note: we encourage everyone to apply to these positions, regardless of SGA or other experience levels! 

  • RETURNING SENATORS please fill out this Senate feedback form as soon as you can. 

    • This will be used to determine engagement hour requirements, senator bonding, and internal communication platforms. It is anonymous and every question is optional. 

  • Senators please fill out the Senate Name Pronunciation form
